چکیده

We perform cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to determine to what extent galaxies lose their gas due to photoheating from an ionizing background. We find that the characteristic mass at which haloes on average have lost half of their baryons is Mc ∼ 6.5×10 h M⊙ at z = 0, which corresponds to a circular velocity of 25 km s. This is significantly lower than the filtering mass obtained by the linear theory, which is often used in semianalytical models of galaxy formation. We demonstrate it is the gas temperature at the virial radius which determines whether a halo can accrete gas. A simple model that follows the merger history of the dark matter progenitors, and where gas accretion is not allowed when this temperature is higher than the virial temperature of the halo, reproduces the results from the simulation remarkably well. This model can be applied to any reionization history, and is easy to incorporate in semianalytical models.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Dynamical friction for dark halo satellites: effects of tidal massloss and growing host potential

Motivated by observations of inner halo satellite remnants like the Sgr and ω-Centauri , we develop fully analytical models to study the orbital decay and tidal massloss of satellites on eccentric orbits in an isothermal potential of a host galaxy halo. The orbital decay rate is often severely overestimated if applying the ChandraSekhar’s formula without correcting for (a) the evaporation and t...

Optical spectroscopy and the UV luminosity function of galaxies in the Abell 1367 , Coma and Virgo clusters . ⋆

Optical spectroscopy and the UV luminosity function of galaxies in the Abell 1367, Coma and Virgo clusters. Abstract. Optical spectroscopy of 93 galaxies, 60 projected in the direction of Abell 1367, 21 onto the Coma cluster and 12 on Virgo, is reported. The targets were selected either because they were detected in previous Hα, UV or r ′ surveys. The present observations bring to 100% the reds...

Effects of Photoionization on Galaxy Formation

We investigate the e ects of the observed UV background radiation on galaxy formation. Photoionization by UV radiation decreases the cooling rate of the gas in halos, so that objects with only large density contrasts can self-shield against the background radiation, thereby allowing the shielded neutral cores to cool and form stars. In the context of the CDM model, we use the criterion that sel...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
